QIC GRE engaged Strategic Spaces to design and document a wayfinding strategy and system for Grand Central Shopping Centre redevelopment in Toowoomba, QLD.
The redevelopment connected the former Gardentown Shopping Centre to the existing Grand Central building via a two-level retail galleria. The project vision was to offer a destination hub for the community, which engaged and embodied the unique characteristics of Toowoomba and the Darling Downs region.
Our strategy was to undertake a thorough spatial analysis, uncover any current points of confusion and then to explore the unique requirements of Grand Central customers, developing a masterplan that prioritised convenience and responded directly to user needs.
Our concepts and were then developed to create a dialogue and narrative between the inherent history, culture and personality of the local area. Our wayfinding system adopted colours from the Darling Downs landscape and featured raw materials that not only featured in the surrounding architecture but drew on a connection to place.
