Project Description

In 2007, our director, Angela Stephens exhibited ‘Ja’ as part of the Melbourne Movement at Salone del Mobile, Milan.

Locally handcrafted and manufactured, the name ‘Ja’ comes from the structures two key materials; jarrah and aluminium. The seat is made from solid profiles of jarrah timber bonded together with a cut-out section to the rear for ergonomic support. The seat rests between solid, cast aluminium legs with supporting rods running through the body of the chair. The outside aluminium legs have a striking mirror polish and the internal face is left raw and exposed.

The design takes cues from traditional Asian culture and was inspired by the movement of Japanese calligraphy, expressed through the strong and sweeping lines of the side profile.
